Chrysler Turbine
You beat me to it-- I was going to link to the Allpar page about it.

Basically, Chrysler only killed the Turbine program because the Federal bailout that spawned the K-car specified that it was too risky. Conspiracy theories about this abound.

Still, a turbine to power a generator in a series-hybrid isn't a totally insane idea.

That thing was all the net rage in 11/07. I thought it was supposed to be done by now. Haven't heard a peep, and the last time I did a search it turned up nothing new. No surprise there.
