92 caprice

Hi I have a 92 chevy caprice that I would like to like to get 40mpg with but I cant afford a cummins 4bt right now so I would like to see what kind of millage I can get with the v8. so far I have upgraded to electric fans put weather striping around headlights and front of hood and several other small things so I was shocked last night when i filled the car up and found out that I was getting 25mpg since I normally get around 20 mpg and on that tank I had a 90mph cruse to work cause I was late weird huh? anyways I would like to get those racing hubcaps but am not sure if they will work since I have the aluminum rims .was also thinking about a air dam but am not sure how long to make it. any other ideas?

Do a lot of reading. It's been said the biggest improver of fuel mileage is adjusting the nut behind the wheel.

Speed is the biggest killer of fuel economy, as well as quick acceleration. Have you put 50 psi in the tires yet? That's the easiest and most popular mod I think.

Check out the 4BT forum for giggles if you want. Lots of info there on putting in a 4BT.

Squeezing 40 MPG out of the stock Caprice engine is a very tall order.

What's your motivation for that mpg target - an interesting technical project? Saving money? MPG bragging rights for a large car?

If that 92 has the th700r4 tranny, which has a 3.07 1st gear, &.70 overdrive. You could get away w/ a set of 2.56s or lower rear gears. Make sure your cooling system is working good, install a 205* t-stat. If it has 9.5'' rear drum brakes they did havve aluiminum drums on caprices. Anyway to warm it up quicker will help overall mpg.

however, you should still be able to do a lot of aeromodding and other required modding to the car while waiting on the 4bt, so that when you get the diesel installed, you'll be well along the way of getting 40mpg

Since you're planning an engine swap later, I am guessing you don't want to put in an RV cam in the gasser. New gears should be considered as part of the cost of the engine swap. You will want them to keep the RPM in diesel range.

Air dam. Start with mock up dam and put it on the ground & trim until you don't scrap anymore. Then make a real one that length. If your material is pliable enough to take a few hits & fold back instead of breaking off you can run it a little lower.

You can run Moon Eyes on aluminum wheels. You just need to drill & tap 3 holes per wheel to screw them onto. Several people here have come up with ways to avoid drilling holes into their wheels.

Does the Caprice have the partially cover rear wheels like the Buick did?
