I saw an ad today for a 1997 ford escort for $550 OBO. Says everything is fine on the car except the engine has a knock in it. What is the best and worst case scenario for what could be wrong with this car? And how much time and/or money will it cost to fix the problem? Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. If there is something relatively cheap I can do I think I can snatch this car up, fix it, and sell it for 5-600 dollars profit. There was another 97 escort listed right below it for $2200...
Lots of things can cause a knock or tap, but judging by the sale price on the car I would guess it was a rod knocking. You never know though. If you can find an escort motor on craigs list and you do your own work you could probably come out of it with a 1000.00 escort.
If you do all the work and find a cheap motor at a junkyard or something, this could be great! If you have to pay someone to do the swap, then I'll have to go with what Bakerboy said.

Worst case is a rod knock. Might as well rebuild the whole motor.
