I think I took the SAT. I'm pretty sure the ACT didn't exist 48 years ago when I was a HS Senior.

1186 on SAT 42 years ago (665 math 521 verbal).
Two people in one of my classes got 1600 (perfect score).
Never did real good in school, after the 6th grade. They didn't study what interested me.
regards
Mech

If I'm remembering correctly, it depended on where you went to school. The western states mostly did the ACT, while the East was SAT.

I got 34 ACT (out of 36) and 1460 SAT (out of 1600). Didn't help me get into the "big name" schools - poor teacher recommendations due to my lack of effort in high school. That's when I learned there's more to success than test scores.

According to the ACT history, the company was founded in 1959, so it likely didn't have much impact nationally by 1960 when I was a HS Jr taking the SAT. IIRC, I scored about 1250. As Andrew says, college admission is more than test scores. Ditto for college success and success in life.
My 1250 SAT got me admitted to the best public university in the state (UC Berkeley). When I got there, they held a Freshman class meeting in a large lecture hall. They told us to look around us at our neighbors. Three out of four of us would not be there in four years, they warned. They would flunk out, drop out, and transfer. It was true. Two others from my high school, and a friend from my neighborhood, all dropped out within a year. Another freshman in my co-op sharing our door (2 doubles and a single) flunked out the first year.
I trudged along, graduating from UCB at age 20. Life was harder than school. If you're lucky, you'll dodge the potholes and disasters lurking to trip you up, and do well in life. Ambition and hard work will take you so far, and enable you to get up again after you've been kneecapped. But everyone who does well should remember the words to the old folk song, "There but for Fortune."

I never took the ACT test, but I wish that I could have, just to see how I would have done.
I remember the first time I took the SAT, though. It was in seventh grade (middle school), and my teachers sent about half a dozen of the nerds like myself to the test with the seniors in the HS. It was nerve-racking, but we all scored in the 900 range, pretty even on the Math and English. Most of the material on the test we hadn't even seen before. Then, when I took it as a junior, I scored in the 1100 range (better on the Math than the English). When I took it for the final time as a senior, I scored 1250ish (740 on the Math and 510 on the English, I think).
I was a slacker. I never did my homework, but aced the tests. I had a gift and I wasted it. I wish that I could go re-live it. I was bored with the material, but a suggestion to those that are still in school, STAY AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, THE REAL WORLD IS DIFFICULT AND YOU NEED ALL THE PREP THAT YOU CAN GET.
