aero, anyone ever seen something like this?

Today I saw two vehicles, identical, black, nothing I could identify. They had a whole bunch of add on aerodynamic shapes. The best I can describe it, they had something that looked like a the back side of a wave shape, about 1" stuck on behind the space gap between the front doors and the back doors. They had similar shapes, on every part of the car's that had any gap's.

I haven't seen anything like these, but since it was 2 different vehicles, following each other, dressed in black, all of the way around, they caught my eye.

Anybody seen something or anything like this? Anybody have any idea if/how it might help do something? Very Curious.

Prototypes in the wild

By your info, you live by BMW Group Designworks USA. It could be something from them or from any design consultants in SoCal. They're a design studio incubator for many industrial design projects as well as transportation design concepts.
Were the vehicles also wrapped with dazzle Op-art vinyl camouflage or did they have manufacturer plates? Could always be a Hollywood prop vehicle.

pre-production?

When I was stationed at Eddies Airplane Patch, and commuting to L.A. on weekends,I would see pre-production cars in convoy heading back from Furnace Creek,Death Valley on 385,where they'd done cooling system evaluation.
Hot-wire anemometers on the roof are a tip-off.
