How much longer is it than the original Civic?
The nose adds about 1 foot, and the boattail adds 3.5 feet. for an overall length of about 15 feet, about the same length as an SUV, but a bit narrower.

Aeromodding to improve mileage is MUCH less expensive than hybridizing to improve mileage and is especially effective if most of your driving is on the highway (but I can still get 55mpg around town with a moderate amount of hypermiling). If this recession/depression continues for very long, a lot of folks might not be able or willing to pay the higher prices for a hybrid.

Found this link in the aerocivic.com logs today: Ecomodding - Topic Powered by eve community - a Discovery Channel discussion forum for the Mythbusters show. So now maybe they're aware of the car.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see them do a segment based on the question: "Can you almost double fuel economy on old cars with only about $400,- of materials?"

Now THAT would be interesting!

It's funny.A number of years ago,Mazda was able to do a new car product- cycle in 36-months.MITI,asked Mazda to please stretch that to 48-months,as a favor to the competition.------- Recently, because of all the virtual reality design tools available to automotive engineers,a new car can go from computer to assembly line in as little as 18-months.------ Since all auto makers do cosmetic annual styling changes, and major facelifts at around 4-year increments, they're already "blowing" the capital necessary to bring an 80-mpg(HWY) car to market, leaving the platform and powertrain intact, and only altering what is "seen" above the beltline.------ With traffic light synchronization,ALL vehicles achieve BETTER urban mpg than "hybrids",as there is no energy to recover,as it's not being WASTED at traffic lights.------ No fancy technology. No fancy price tag.But maybe that's exactly what they are afraid of most?----------- And did you hear the one about the new traffic lights for aircraft, and ships, and trains, and elevators, and submarines, and rivers, and lawnmowers,an-------------------

Lots of traffic to Aerocivic.com yesterday: 8000 hits, where a usual day is around 200-300

Why?

Boing Boing picked it up. It's on the front page now, but the direct link to their short item is:

Crudely streamlined Honda Civic reduces drag - Boing Boing

I hadn't checked the comments yet, but you're right. Not terrible.

I like how one poster defends the Aerocivic against a Chrysler concept car someone else suggested was a better execution:

Quote:
Also this car is
a) real...not a concept you'll likely never see
b) has a lower drag coeficient than the concept, even with how poor the body work is.
c) the aerocivic could have an even lower CD if the guy soothes out the underbody and shaves the door handles.

Update:

Mike added a blurb summarizing the fuel economy increase & other characteristics of the new lean burn engine installed last summer:

Aerocivic - Honda Civic modifications for maximum gas mileage - aerocivic.com

Scroll down to "Update (Feb 2010): lean burn engine installed for more MPG"
