Android Application - Need Ideas! - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum

I am a beginning android developer and I am looking to have something innovative. I am also looking to get into hypermiling when I thought I could bridge the gap by merging the two.

At this point, I am not aware of any apps that help hypermiling. However, android phones connect to the internet, have force sensors, gps, and other sorts of hardware/software goodies that make it a perfect candidate to be used as an aide.

So, my idea for the app would include the following features:

Instant MPG
Average MPG
MPG tracker - enter in info when you fill up your tank of gas filled + current millage
Force sensors - warn if braking or accelerating too quickly
Advance notice of stop signs/hills so you can begin to coast

If you have any other ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. For the MPG calculates, a bluetooth OBD2 device would be required. Let me know.

suggest posting in instrumentation. I have an android tablet, and a bluetooth elm327 thingy, but have not played with them. Leave the source open (and make it work on phones and tablets) and you might get some help.
Also look at Torque, I see an mpg display there.

Number 5 seems like the most interesting feature. You could enter your car model and have the rolling resistance, air resistance and weight all calculated to tell you when to start coasting. I would download that in a heartbeat.

I would like to see an app for doing coast down tests. That could be done without having to use a OBDII cable, just having the gps start measuring at a set point and record distance and speed.

It should be possible to add all those features to mass produced vehicles, adding only a few dollars to the sticker price. Neil

If there is an online webservice or repository of info for this, this could be downloaded automatically.

However, calculating this on the fly would be somewhat cpu intensive. Not sure how accurate I could make it. Is there some type of guideline or formula that is followed for this?
