Any GPS for cycling recommendations?

In the next couple of weeks a bridge on my commute will be closing for about 2 years. I'm interested in comparing the distance and altitude changes between my normal route (14miles) and the two optional routes (~16 miles). All of my options are hilly so this is really only for comparison sake.

It would be neat if this could be overlayed on a map but i'm not holding my breath on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? What software or gps to use?
