anyone hear about this

just an interesting article i saw on yahoo.. kinda sad that they didnt think about what they would be killing by building that dam..

PAGE, Ariz. - Federal officials have started a flood in the Grand Canyon in hopes of restoring its ecosystem.
The torrent will flow for three days from the Glen Canyon Dam on the Arizona-Utah state line. It began Wednesday morning.

The canyon's ecosystem was permanently changed after the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1963.

The Colorado River downstream used to be warm and muddy, but now it's cold and clear. The shift helped speed the extinction of four fish species and push two others, including the endangered humpback chub, near the edge.

Officials hope the flooding will stir up sediment and redistribute it through the canyon.

if anyone else has more on this i would be interested in hearing more about it.

I've heard about the problems it has caused in the past but I didn't know they were planning on doing this. They regularly dump water down stream and in fact have sirens on part to warn people in the lower banks. This must be a more massive release than normal. I wonder what affects that will have on the lake area.

we have to be carefully what we are doing, but we need many times the number of ponds than what we have. many more smaller lakes spread out to slow down the runoff.

SOme little fish isn't thriving since the dam was put in, and this is the third flood as a study to see whether doing this more often would be beneficial. Again, the arrogance of man adapting the environment has put nature out of balance. Anyway, this is just another string of studies to see what they really need to do.

Yes, we need more ways to manipulate the water system for our needs, but we do need to look at the impact it has on ecosystems.

I'm not a tree hugger, not in the Sierra Club. I drive a Jeep thank you...

ok anyhow my rant earlier, i heard on the radio station how some environmentalists got pissed at an airline because they sent a 777 from hethroe (yeah if i didnt butcher that ill be surprised) to the us with only 5 passengers. anyhow they needed the plane here anyways and the 5 passengers were bumped from a plane which was overbooked. so heres my thing, flights like this dont happen verry often (that im aware of after all its bad business practice) and they would have needed to transport the plane either way so to me its one of those atleast they had 5 passengers instead of sending it empty

\end rant
