Not only that but diesel fuel fluctuates in price between 25 cents and sometimes even a dollar more per gallon than gas, at least in my area.

Spark ignition engines are really not as evil as some people would like to make them out to be, they just need a few improvements here and there which will come with time. Toyota thinks they can hit 45% peak thermal efficiency with streetworthy spark ignition engines :shrug:
Diesels were usually more expensive for being quite "overbuilt" to deal with its higher internal pressures. However, some indirect-injection Diesels were not so much more expensive than its gasser counterparts.

Spark ignition can provide a more homogeneous combustion process, but the higher volatility of light fuels such as gasoline, ethanol and gaseous fuels such as CNG and LPG also has an important role on that matter...
