update

This morning I had the double-swing-away mount far enough along for 'proving.'
After moving the lock-pin receiver,re-drilling the lock-pin penetration location, and cutting away the original pin location on the end of the mount I had what I needed.
The 1st swing frame pivot location would cause the tail to collide with the passenger side of the bed were it not for the second articulation built into the assembly, allowing the tail to ease away from the bed enough while swinging away towards the passenger side, exposing the bed cavity for baby's ingress/egress.
A caster'd pogo, inserted into the belly of the tail will take stress off the mount while swung open.
I'll pick up some 1/2" EMT before I get home. And use our community barn's slab to help layout the new tail geometry, even if I have to move the welder over there to tack it,saving the layout, then finish the welding back home.
The tail will need to respect the 10-degree departure angle, but I want the 2.8-degree diffuser section for DARKO.(the Beechcraft control surface pulleys can be re-purposed for that duty).

I went back and got the blue wakeboard control arm at the top of the pile shown at Permalink 68. Carrying it home on my bike I found that if the front fitting is 3" above the front forks then my arms go through those yellow straps and it rests on my hip and overhangs the rear wheel by ~3-4".

So by the time the weather turns I can have a swivel mount so it will swing up and forward for ingress/egress or to one side for stowage. Then I can Gorilla glue a bicycle helmet inside a poncho and wrap the free edge around the aluminum teardrop frame and trim and fasten it. The corners of the poncho would stick though the yellow straps and in sharp turns I'll have to curl my wrist around the frame on the inside handlebar.

So I guess I'll have to buy a few more to make the aluminum framed boat tail my Superbeetle deserves.

We reserved 1:00 in the afternoon and 3-hours.That will give me time to get there and 'release' baby and assemble her,and do the mods I can to 'Spirit' that will survive the trip up the ramp to the tunnel.
The control room is pretty spacious and I don't think Layne will mind the extra bodies.
I'll call him around the 9th of August and make sure.
Are you going to have your truck? We might be able to measure it if the frontal area isn't huge.

Yes Jona will be present .
It's hard to believe that a 2wd ~3" front lowered otherwise stock full size truck is to big for there tunnel. But that was the answer given ,based on pictures with scale I presented to them earlier in the year.
I would like to see the smoke even if the CDa #s are skewed by tunnel wall clearance. We can do naked, headache /ladder rack and aero dressed(3 runs if you desire) . It takes less than 5min to remove the shell (by my self)and less than 5min for the headache rack. @less than 50lbs a 1man job. This "easy removal" was part of the design.

Let's do if we can.It takes 4-minutes to do a data acquisition run,so even if the data is less than perfect,we should see a trend for the different configurations, and this would be the best way to see that.
I can't imagine that the smoke flow would be corrupted so badly that we wouldn't learn something with that as well.
The hardest part is just getting the vehicle in the test section, centered, moving the load cell uprights to fit the wheel track and wheelbase, and strapping the front wheels down.
Also,if we run the truck 'naked',we may have a OEM Cd to compare to the numbers we get, giving us more info about the tunnel itself.
We'll want the bed really clean so missiles don't get sucked into the fans.

update

After creating a reference datum jig I've been able to measure/cut/notch/clamp/tack-weld most of the new boat tail's space frame superstructure over two days.
It WILL require the pogo support as the swing mount experiences quite a torsion as the tail comes off the bumper perch, swinging into thin air.
This was anticipated,not a problem.
I'll work all weekend and by August 1st I should have a pretty good foundation for the finer dimensional work.
I'll have the Insight too,so I can really tear into the deeper projects.

Little Jona and friends good to go

Talked with Layne at DARKO yesterday. He's okay with running Jona (I think you guys talked on the phone about it) and having extra guests.
He did say that Gary Eaker felt Jona was too large in frontal area. We'll learn something. We just can't take it to the bank.
I'm out of steel again and will pick more up before heading home.
I decided to create a detachable 3-foot stinger for 'baby',sectioned at Kamm's 50% frontal area line so we can measure it both ways.
This will allow more usable space in the truck bed for other mods as well.
I'm planning a full stinger attachment for 'Spirit' as well. It's got to be made in 2-pieces.
It's chilly is the shop.Good to have some arctic parkas around.
