barn find 1968 rambler american eco project!!

my friend bought this car on ebay a month ago. im buying it off of him. 68 rambler american 4 door 199 6 cylinder with stick on the column. engine is locked up. sat for 20 years 45k on the odometer. NO RUST!! im going to try and locate a stock replacement engine and get that going. in the future i have a 71 gremlin x 258 engine and a mustang t5 that will be swapped in. looking for 30 mpg highway with that combo. I only have one pic of it right now cant wait to ressurect her!!

If you use the ford 200ci 6 then you can still get parts cheap!!!
Also, the auzzies have a bunch of very cool bolt-ons....crossflow heads.....etc.

+1 on Aussies having 'unique' performance parts, ie: a slant-6 HEMI, etc.

its going to be all amc powered. (besides the mustang t5 transmission. amcs used the t5 in the 80s so they bolt right up to an amc bellhousing. differences with the borg warner t5s from make to make would be input shaft length/gear ratios/tailshaft housing length/shifter location, etc. basically doing this for reliability and economy as it would see highway use) amc engines are easy to find parts for and cheap too. no need to make custom mounts for a ford engine. there is a serious demand for amc engines just with jeeps so that makes parts readily available for amc cars too.

amazing!
and a bench seat!!!!

slownugly 09-04-2012 03:44 PM

yea the seats are really nice shape but they need to be cleaned alot!! its going to get all new brake system and new radial white walls. i might do all that stuff while its waiting for the heart transplant. these cars roll so easy its going to be fantastic for EOC. and easy to set up a kill switch with the vintage technology.

I am just curious -- with only 45K on the clock -- why not rebuild the existing engine?

Right now it's the fact of the unknown. There was about a quart of water in the oil pan. Rocker arm shafts are rusted fast. Removed them and engine still doesn't spin. There's also an indication of water in the carb. Which means water got in both the crankcase and induction system. (into the pistons/valves) been soaking the pistons for days but it's not budging. I have a lead on a replacement engine already for 150 bux but it's 6 hours away :/
