For new batteries, it looks like lead is dead. EV components is offering the newer TS cells for about $390/kWh plus tax and shipping (if you live in the state and don't do local pickup), which is pretty much the same price per usable (Peukert's) kWh that lead offers, at about a third of the weight and supposedly ten times the lifespan. For a beer budget lead conversion, finding used lead is still probably cheaper up front, hopefully free, but in terms of new batteries, w/ the cost per kWh stored it's pretty hard to beat the cheap LFP cells from China.

I was looking at those for my electric car, to replace my $900 Lead Acid battery pack with Lithium it would cost around $2,500 if I remember right, about the same as Foxx power charges for their batteries, the charger on the other hand is going to be a costly investment that you need to add to that price as well.

What LA cells at what rating were you looking at?
