This is how I travel...shortest route from city/Point of Interest to city/POI. Nice compromise between the absolute fastest and the most scenic with the shorter distance usually making up a little for the slower speeds. Of course, my mileage is usually a lot better too and I see areas that mos outsiders never even hear of.

For example, I bought my truck in Richmond, VA then took backroads to Roanoke (through Appomattox), then to Asheville and Atlanta....I think we spent maybe an hour total on the interstate.

What the others say. Shorter and slower = win-win. Win for the regular driver, and a bigger win for the hypermiler. Serious hypermilers can get better mileage in the city than they can on the highway.

I generally average better mileage commuting than on road trips.

It would be impossible to tell without a SG (Scan Gauge) but I'll go against the grain and say the longer trip provided there are more stops on the shorter one. If you can travel at around 40-45 MPH with no stops I think you could do better then stop and go from a cold start congested driving. Although 8 miles is a lot to make up.
