If 'lifetime' is the length of the warranty, I wouldn't trust the chain past 10,000 miles before the warranty is over. I only trust my belt on my car since the engine is a non interference design.

Yeah I used to just carry a spare T belt for my Honda. I could change it in about 20 minutes on the highway lol.

The VR6 is a nice engine, but the cost of an overhaul is a problem. An uncle of mine had one, and even considered to swap it for a GM 60-degree V6.

Blowing the engine right when you buy it has got to be one of the worst feelings ever!

I bought it like 6 months ago, drove it around without registration on it on the back roads here, never had an issue with it... put a plate on it and BAM. there it goes.

I may keep the chassis around and stick one of my IDI diesels in it... or I may pull the 5 sp and pedal box and convert the VR6 Passat I'm getting over to manual trans. Duno yet.

With the TDI if you do not know when the timing belt was changed assume it never has and change it befor driving if or you could be in the same situation down the road.

Yeah I plan on getting a timing kit soonish. I'll max the mechanical timing and add a lift pump while i'm in there, among other things [exhaust things.. ]

The last owner appears to have kept maintenance up on the car, or at least kept it clean. He claims to have put 215 of the 299.5k miles on it himself at 45MPG the whole time.

Some of the other mods will include 5th injector delete, cat delete and straight exhaust, intake, turbo and intercooler cleaning, mechanical timing advance and electrical upgrades.
