Ah, the fairing. That was originally developed for the Approach and Landing Test series on OV-101, the space shuttle Enterprise. At the time, they were very concerned about the aerodynamically 'dirty' rocket nozzles on the rear fouling airflow to the shuttle carrier aircraft's tail that they developed that as well as installing a custom set of twin alternate vertical stabilizers on the tips of the rear horizontal stabilizers.
