My father managed to squeak off a 42 mpg tank on the way driving straight from NJ-->TX with a 350 lb passenger in the car with him! They did this in a 1991 Escort LX Coupe 1.9L 5 speed.

They must have spent a lot of time in neutral, because going through the Virginia's and some parts of Tennessee and Arkansas have some pretty long downhill stretches of highway.

Anyway I have no doubt you can pull off higher mileage just keep working on your driving technique and memorize all the points you can coast or turn off on your daily commute and you'll certainly save some more gas!
