Here's a very convenient way to calibrate your odometer: use
Google Maps to get the actual distance between two points, and then drive your car over that same route and then compare them. Do this for several different locations, and if the correction factor is close on the various routes, then you can say you know the right correction factor.
Like all calibration methods -- the longer the distances, the better.
