Civic diesel?

Seems Honda has made a diesel Civic in recent years, for some markets globally? Is it possible to convert an older, say 1998 Civic to a diesel? If so, are their engines you think would be candidates? I'm just curious to see if folks have ideas... I am not really planning this... I have too few skills right now and too much work on my plate.

Black and Green will be rebuilt over decades as parts die--until it becomes a different car. Goal is only 60-70 mpg at posted speeds. I'm not trying for highest possible mileage.

Calculators: standard deviation, Ohms Law, & drag HP losses.

VW motors could be swapped with plenty of fabrication necessary. It's just easier to buy the VW to begin with. Plentiful parts and no fabrication. Early golf and jetta diesels are plentiful and relatively cheap.

The Rover 400 had a 2L diesel engine, and was based on the Honda Domani, which was based on the 1992 Honda Civic EG-platform.
The Domani's with 5 doors were sold as Civics in Europe.

Are you sure it's the current model, because even here in Belgium there no longer is a diesel Civic (diesel gets about 80% of the car market here)

Sure, but that's with the more recent 2.2L diesel engine - that came a generation after the Rover diesel.

The 2.2L Diesel is also in the Accord, BTW.

Sigh... I got to drive one of those egg-shaped iCDTI Civics a couple years ago. It was over here for "testing purposes" under manufacturer plates. It spent a couple months and then had to go back home.

220 251 lb ft of torque in a Civic. It would pull hard if you wanted. It would do 80+ mpg on the highway if you wanted. (I wanted )

With the 1.7L CDTi ? That'd be a generation later, right ?

The 2.2L diesel has also been available in the still current Civic - we don't get the US 2012 Civic yet.
Apparently, there are even some overly ripe 2009 models to be found new

A list of 2nd hand diesel Civics in Belgium :
Aanbod: Honda, Civic, Verkoopprijs (

(That 1996 Honda Civic 1.7 CTDi ES must be an error.)

You can see the late 1990s models came with the 2.0D from Rover.
