Anytime is a good time to learn.

You'll be able to squeeze much more mileage out of a stick than an auto, even more that the difference between their EPA ratings. If there is any way to get a stick, you should. Plus its a lot more fun to drive, in my opinion.

Try to avoid buying a car from someone who says it gets significantly lower mileage than you think it ought to get. Whether it's the car or the driver at fault for the poor mileage record, there's a decent chance it's not as mechanically sound as you'd like.

Owner: "You can redline it in the city and still get 22 mpg."

Me: "You've told me what I needed to know. Goodbye."

I rank mileage potential by:
  1. Engine displacement.
  2. Roof-line and height.
  3. Engine / transmission technology.

Found two '01 civics. One is a dx with the 1.7 pfi engine and the other is a lx with the 1.7 vtec engine. Both are automatics. Which engine would be better for mpgs?

Those might be the same engine. I think my Civic's VTEC is PFI - afraid I'm not totally certain though, and it's out of town so I can't double-check for you. VTEC and PFI are good things for mileage, IMO. PFI means a little less fuel in the manifold when you shutdown (at lights or EOC).

For '01, there were three engines, all 1.7L D-series. Wikipedia: D17A1 D17A2 and D17A6

The standard VTEC engine was in the EX only (at least in the US). You want to avoid this one.

The SOHC non-VTEC engine was in the DX and LX (and the more rare "VP" model). This one is good.

And finally, the VTEC-E which is in the HX only. This engine is best.

If you found an ad for an LX with a VTEC engine, I believe it is either misrepresented or has had an engine swap.

Both of those cars have the same engine, so both are fine.

Just look them both over close and see which you like better. I'd pay particular attention to anything odd with the tranny, I'm a bit leery about Honda's automatics...

VP stands for "Value Package". It's a DX with some extra features, but not enough to make it an LX. Still should have the base engine of the DX.

A 2000 DX/LX/VP is a good option. It's the same car mechanically as mine.
