Distress often makes us lacking of the proper problem solving skills. It's why we're here, don't sweat it.

The 5 wire sensors are very valuable for high efficiency. Don't replace it unless it is bad. Instead, replace the jerry rigged adapter with a proper one that lets you adjust the mixture.

It's a 4wire, everyone else is wrong.

Sure, they can. They can tell you without the VIN, as well. Just ask the dealer which one is necessary for CA emissions.

In fact, I'll just look it up for you. I'm bored.

Majestic Honda lists it as:
19820 SENSOR, FR. OXYGEN 145.17

Now, you call the dealer, give them that part number, ask if it's in stock, and ask how many wires it has on it. Say Thank You, when you're done, and hang up.

AutoZone shows this:

It's a 4 wire for KL emissions. (California) Should have black, gray, and 2 x white.

The 5 wire sensor is for the lean-burn equipped VX's, which aren't available for California emissions.
