Arizona is having a warm winter because of global warming. The rest of the U.S. is having an especially cold winter because of global warming.

Which is it? Does global warming make winters colder or warmer?

If global warming makes winters worse then cranking up the heat only makes it worse!

It is both - because the jet stream is weaker (probably because the Arctic ice is melting), it is both warmer overall, and colder in some places. The weakened jet stream is wobbly, and cold air is held in places where it doesn't usually go.

Global weirdness.

We are seeing more extreme droughts, and more extreme precipitation events. These are linked; not contradictory.

PA got 5 feet of snow in 3 hours because of global warming.
But man made global warming "will soon make snowy winters a thing of the past".

To add to the list of why man made global warming is dead and bloated.
Climate gate 1 and 2, surely #3 is in the making.
NOAA got caught last week removing weather stations from the data set that produce anonymously cool readings and adding stations that produce more warm readings.
Climate change is real, they are faking the results because the planet isn't warming as fast as they need it to so they can say mans activities are driving it.

Wave power is cool.

The lake water is warmer than it has been.

The Arctic ice is melting more over time, weakening the jet stream, which allows colder air to "escape" the Arctic.

Cold air over warm water = lots of snow.

en.wikipedia.org:Chaos as a spontaneous breakdown of topological supersymmetry
Quote:
In continuous time dynamical systems, chaos is the phenomenon of the spontaneous breakdown of topological supersymmetry which is an intrinsic property of evolution operators of all stochastic and deterministic (partial) differential equations.[21][22] This picture of dynamical chaos works not only for deterministic models but also for models with external noise, which is an important generalization from the physical point of view because in reality all dynamical systems experience influence from their stochastic environments. Within this picture, the long-range dynamical behavior associated with chaotic dynamics, e.g., the butterfly effect, is a consequence of the Goldstone's theorem in the application to the spontaneous topological supersymmetry breaking.
So there ya go.

I only get 90% of it as well. And I read James Gliek in 1989!

Possibly a better entry point into the Chaos theory? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold's_cat_map

As a kid it wasn’t uncommon to have snow at Halloween and snow still melting in June.

Up till 3 weeks ago it was on and off 60’s, now temperatures are below zero which around here is pretty normal this time of year.

In the past a real -40f did happen in a January/ February on and off, I have not seen that in a long time.

Just because it gets cold for a brief period in January / February doesn’t mean much when it follows a abnormally warm period when it normally would be cold

How is this bad?

Dont worry next time the Beaufort gyre unloads you will see it again.
