Staggered Seat Examples

Staggered seats, Porsche Type 64, McLaren F1 and Speedtail, 2011 Audi Urban Concept.......................and a few others.

Looking for a layout with dimensions is a challenge, if you find anything please post it in this thread.

A UK patent (Ford Global) with diagrams on the first half dozen pages is available as a PDF in the link below:
https://patents.google.com/patent/GB2509359A/en

I'm rethinking one of my "for fun" graph paper designs, narrowing it up a bit.

I know that a lot of cars have the front passenger seat set back a bit, looking for something a bit more extreme without going to tandem seating.

The design I'm playing with is a 3-seater just in case you were wondering, but NOT centered/symmetrical F1 McLaren style.

Any VW Beetle? The cowl width is 41" measured at the glass, what is yours?

DDG cannot find a picture online, but I have it in a book somewhere: The WWII Beetle SS interior. The left side had the normal two seats, but the right side hasd a fancy full recliner seat set back with a tyewriter self that stored under the glove box, and a machine pistol strapped to the kick panel ahead of the door.

If you want the reference, I can look for it; else no. One of my favorite three seat interiors is in Rod Emory's 356 Notchback. You can barely see it in this picture:

https://flatsixes.com/cars/tuned-por...law-rod-emory/

...but the center rear seat is a child seat with a four-point lap belt! Hot laps with the whole family.

I'd like to see a single right side gull door and the passenger feet up next to the driver's seat pan. It would only be a two seater. I like the not-quite-tandem planform, so the back seater can have some forward view.

Yep, that's what I'm working on, but the snag has been the passenger's left knee hitting the back of the driver's seat.

Ford Global avoided this by stretching out the legs of the passenger.

I believe this deals with pelvic/hip bone geometry and at what angles one's legs sprout out at depending on how high or how low they are seated at.

I have a pair of fixed racing seats out in my shed that I have not had a chance to install into the old 911. I have a chance to play around with this first hand, only problem is I'm a small person and what works for me at 5'-5" isn't going to work well for my 6'-5" friends. Guess I will have to invite my friend Jim Z. over once I set the mock-up stage for the seats.

I really can't get comfortable for a long haul at those lower seating heights and knee angles. It is why I like driving my MkIV beetle, I can have a more upright seating position. My shoulders are the wide spot and if I could put knees next to driver's seat, it could get ~10" narrower at least. That plus a better windshield would have some nice yield with the current drivetrain. I really have no use for that 3rd seat you speak of, but a long hatchback for storage and improved aero is good.

Some interesting interior seating/sleeping mock-up ideas being explored for a flying wing (Vee).

About the 13:00 mark......................

I did an initial pass through the books I have unpacked -- no luck; but undoubtedly this is the title.

Compared to the VW I have my passenger seat set further back about a foot, and both front seats inboard about 6-inches each towards each other.

This proposed layout is where the front passenger's left knee is currently an issue.

I did not want to lower or raise heads of front occupants, the 1977 Ford Global solution of raising the floor for front passenger is even more attractive if seeking additional battery pack space.

The third row rear seat/storage area has a greatly lowered seat compared to the almost van-like high position of my driver.

I'm now considering a three tier solution this morning. Driver high like a van seat, front passenger mid-height like a sedan, and rear seat (molded tray) practically down to the floor.

The staggered seating with diagonal views may make the blocked forward view of the single rear passenger a little more tolerable. However the usual tunnel view between the front seats viewing from the rear would be compromised. In this design not such a big deal as it's mostly a child seat or storage area aft.

If you look closely at image 1. of the VW transporter van, the seating does tier downward the farther back you go. Could this be for seeing out the rear window? Guesses at the reasons?

I'd guess the front seats are elevated to clear the wheel houses, and don't think the two rear seats are different.
