EPA ratings are fairly realistic and achievable by the looks of them, so doing better isn't too hard.
It's a wee bit different with the far less realistic Euro ratings though.

For a 2006 Volvo V50 2.4L automatic
EPA is 19 city, 27 hwy, and 22 combined.
Euro rating is 18 city, 35.1 hwy, for 25.8 combined.
A difference of over 17%, just by the different ratings.

As members are even beating Euro-ratings, surely beating the new-EPA ratings is not that much of a problem.

You have to remember that Euro gallons and US gallons are different
US to EU mpg
19 = 22.8
22 = 26.4
27 = 32.4
(Math provided by Fuelly)

Just saying that the numbers are not that different other than the city mpg.
