Hnm. I have an idea to get more out of the alternator.
What if the alternator were connected to a set of capacitors, and a boost converter used to charge the batteries off the capacitors.
That way when the alternator is off the capacitors get to discharge, and whe the alternator is on, they can absorb the maximum amphours they can.
