Thanks for the info and I know, I'll be talking to one soon. What vehicle would the 3.3 be out of?

It's not currently in any vehicle that I'm aware of, as it is a heavy equipment type engine. Don't let that deter you, though, as the 4bt is used in a LOT of heavy equipment. I found out about it when someone put the manual pumped variety into a Jeep Wrangler. IIRC he got 30 mpg with loads of take off power. After reading up on it, turns out Cummins makes a self contained common rail variety that bests its manual pumped brother in all the right ways.

Google 3.3 QSB and enjoy. Here's one link I found pretty quickly

There is this Explorer that got a 3.3 swapped into it. His best tank was 34MPG, not bad at all. 40 would probably be easy with some aero mods and technique.

I found this thread and this thread on TDI club about converting to diesel in California. That is using EPA certified engines, but it sounds like you could probably get it registered.

Thanks for the links, I've found from many different experiences that is really a case by case basis. Some people get screwed. Some get off real easy. It's all luck
