Will have to make a spoof fake OBDII port to plug the device into and have it feed nice normal data.

That's quite a leap, a non sequitur, and an emotionally provocative one at that. It has nothing to do with the actual topic.

I thought this thread was about voluntarily allowing an insurance company, which supplies mandated auto insurance, to gather and record detailed data (as a quid pro quo) about all the driving you do via electronic monitoring, which is a form of surveillance.

The speed limit was recently raised from 65 MPH to 70 MPH on the I-80 turnpike. Knowing that the companies whose livelihood depends on making accurate maps (GPS manufacturers like Garmin and TomTom), sometimes take up to a year to update their maps to reflect changed speed limits on freeways (I-77 north in Canton still shows 55 MPH as the speed limit on my TomTom, even though it's actually 65 MPH), what incentive do these insurers have to ensure their maps are also accurate?

Put another way, I could be doing the speed limit on the interstate here in Canton, or on I-80, and I could be charged higher rates by the insurer because their funky device and their computer maps said I was "speeding." (And if you think that "they don't record location" negates this argument, keep in mind this very thing they're doing now, recording braking and speed and time of day, was unthinkable 5 years ago.)

No, thank you.

And another thing - This so-called "voluntary" program has actually a pretty big incentive going for it.

Given that auto insurance is mandatory to begin with, and given that we're currently living in a gawdawful economy right now, any savings in something like auto insurance means more money to millions of people that they could spend on luxuries like food or gas or utilities or rent. So this "voluntary" program could be argued to be de facto compulsory.

Exactly, and when it does no one is going to save anything, insurance companies have a limit that they can charge and expect people to pay, my Uncle drove without insurance or a license for 5 years because he couldn't pay the insurance, at least he claimed.

This may become more common if this type of thing becomes compulsory and manditory
