Driving to bike races!

C'mon now, who else does it?

I've done it a few times carpooling with friends, a lot more time in the cycling van, and will be doing it the next two weekends (15 miles and 85 miles, one way, respectively).

In some sense, I feel bad...But then I don't drive much anyway.

i don't see the point in it.
I don't really ride my bike much just for the fun of it, i use it to get home (if i carpool in some days)

Well, picky any single thing that you really like to do that can't be done in your own home and you'll see the reason...

It's just more ironic than "driving to a movie" or "flying to australia"

Worse yet... I prefer carrying mine inside the vehicle which meant a large gas hog for my 65cm bikes.

I only race a few times per year. Usually there is substansial distance involved. I carpool when I can. I can easily carry 4 riders and equiptment. We try to stay close to the actual venue and use our bikes for local transportation.

My confession:
The biggest fuel waster was my across Ohio ride. A van with crew and official had to follow me the whole way to verify the crossing. My brother drove down from Chicago to drive for me. We did set the record though.

Don't race, but I used to put the bike in the back of the Cherokee and fly off to Idaho or the coast for a day of riding around.

Not good with the networking aspect of racing, considering I just had my first at the end of July, but I have a feeling it's just a necessary evil or part of living in the burbs when all the events are in the city.

Admittedly long ago, I used to put the bikes on the roof rack of my old vw bug to go race. I'd usually offer a ride to one of the other guys in the club, they'd buy breakfast and I'd buy gas... to be close to equal these days, it would have to be the brunch at the Ritz-Carelton of something LOL

Look at it this way... while training and racing, you're not burning electricity watching the 'tube', the CO2 rich air you are exhauling is feeding the trees and plants. See? Win-Win!

I trained my 'new to bike riding' girlfriend over this past year, who did the California SF to LA AIDS fundraiser ride in June. I bet I put on 500 road miles and 50 hours spinning at the gym as her trainer.

I think it's great you have some other outlet to put some energy into while keeping yourself fit.

Up until a couple of years ago all the time I just throw it in the back and go. Average trip was anywhere from 2-4 hours one way.
