Caution using just water

Hi,

I have several cautions on using just water in a radiator of an auto.

1) The water boils at a much lower temperature than coolant
2) The coolant has lubricant, depending on water pump design, keeps bearings lubricated.

About 30 years ago, I did an engine flush, and filled the radiator with mostly water. Two months later, the water pump bearing failed!! Ouch.

Jim.

You were lucky if you didn't have at least one head gasket burnt.

I used pure water because I didn't wanna spend money on coolant, only to dump it along the road! I reckon it is okay for such a short distance. Currently the car is running fine, it's back to the regular 50/50 of the green stuff and water.

I did a compression test after I got it back. Everything is okay, so I am assuming head gaskets are not burnt up. Fingers crossed.
