Finally looked into my gearbox oils and for the daily Escort they appear to be synthetic, just need to double check the gear box type.

My truck on the other hand has mineral 80w/90, so I might change that to synthetic 75w/90. The gearbox is rather stiff until it warms up so a thinner oil might help with that.

I am thinking this weekend I might get some thermal insulation pannels and put them under the bonnet to try and retain heat in the engine bay.

my '95escort had a semi-good insulator under the hood stock.

Drafted behind a semi today. I noticed remarkably more vacuum @ 50mph/80km/h

I have an idea.

I have a DEFA block heater set in my car, I could buy the standard DEFA socket kit (meant for a in-car electric heater) and use it to wire a intelligent battery charger to the battery.

Thus charging the car battery while the block heater is plugged.

There is a official DEFA solution, but its 200 bucks. This would be a lot cheaper.

I did the wiring in my previous car and did this, and I also wired in a cabin heater.

I hope that you can read my professional technical diagram :P (it didn't work so I have edited it)

Maints cable - box - Timer - Cabin Heater
Maints cable - box - Timer - Engine Heater
Maints cable - box - Battery Charger

I worked really well, the timers were together so when I parked up it was just confirm the on time, then rotate the dial to the current time. Then in the morning I had a warm engine, a warm cabin, and a charged battery. All that was left was to shovel some snow away from the drive and give the car a wipe over with a brush to remove any un melted snow.

It is such a shame now as we have moved (earlier in the year) and have gained a car port, but sadly we lost the electricity.

Also if you park somewhere public, try to secure the cable to your car, as there are plenty of bar stewards who will walk off with the cable.

The mileage has been about 40 mpg now, If I drive calmly.

A nice one, if we consider that it's winter here, about -6 and I have a CAI

if I had the battery charger, I could do a partial alt delete.

Wire a second battery or a couple of capacitors and put a kill switch to the alternator.

Anyone know if the block heater is beneficial to use at warm temperatures?
