ECU edits / aftermarket ECUs

Ethanol blended fuels are not suitable for all cars (and besides that, some can be bad for fuel economy).

ECUs in FI cars are tuned to a certain RON level of fuel, so if you go up in the Octane level (as is the case for older cars), then the ECU isn't going to take advantage of it.

I did a search (and will continue to search), but has anyone here changed out or modified the ECU to adapt to higher RON fuel (so that it's extra 'energy' isn't just wasted?)

You would probably need a custom remap to test this out. The guy in the Autospeed TDI article (search is your friend) used a remapper in Australia to do his TDI Roomster. They do petrol cars too and keep the original map so you can switch back.
