Well thanks folks...I suspected my Geo shut off the fuel when I let off the gas. I stopped coasting in neutral and shutting the engine off for long coasts...a bit much for someone that just enjoys driving.

With no hyper miling techniques other than common sense in timing approaches, I get 50+ combined mpg with my Geos...consistently. I used to do better with straight gas...I hope alcohol sees its day...it isn't good for mileage, the pocketbook, taxes (huge subsides) smell, or engine wear. By the way, I add Marvel Mystery Oil to my tanks occasionally and always to the oil 300 miles before I change it. One of my Geos stopped burning oil entirely...Marvel is a marvel. Powdered graphite in the transmission eventually quieted it down and now I can get into 1st gear without double clutching half the time. A full four tire alignment and balance increased gas mileage dramatically years ago. The previous owner hit something that brought the car to a SUDDEN stop...it injured her I understand. The cost was $295 or so but they got that bugger straight once again, all 4 tires. Some bending and welding was involved and a used steering rack.

Never heard of anyone putting graphite powder in the transmission. That's interesting.

I've heard of dodgy second hand sales places putting sand in to make a gearbox quieter though, so maybe it does work.

Sand? I can't see that making a gearbox quieter.
I always heard they used sawdust.

Depending how badly worn the gearbox is, graphite powder mixed with the oil will help it keep going for a while. It's still only temporary though.

Thanks for your input, Owlafaye!! Have you ever considered regularly slicking up your oil at oil changes? I shared my info on a related post.

It's refreshing to see someone willing to try new ideas.

I mostly drive a 1st gen. CRX, so car wise; I feel like we are at least cousins of some type!

I knew a guy named Barney once who bought a card from an older lady. Gearbox was full of sawdust. He had an awful time with it.
