Eoc? (Problem restarting)

Tryed EOC today and car almost did not restart when i came to a stop? Would this be a weak battery...its suppose to be new??? <Maybe someone could explain exactly how this is done...i dont think I did this incorrectly, but maybe I did seeing as I almost didnt restart.


How is EOC used properly...how far must one coast to make it worth while? Do you need stop completely to restart?

So there are two ways to get the car started again after you've killed it.

If you've come to a complete stop you can just start 'er up with the key like normal.

If you haven't come to a complete stop, make sure your key is in the "on" or "run" position, put the gearbox into gear (I'd reccommend using one gear higher than you would otherwise think you'll need. IE-going 20mph, I'd be in 3rd gear) Once you're in gear, slowly release the clutch pedal and the engine should fire right up.

When you say it almost didn't start, do you mean it cranked over and over but didn't catch? Or was it a problem of not cranking, or cranking very slowly?

In either case, I'd be reluctant to be shutting the engine off until you've got the root problem sorted out.

Also - you're aware that you've only got about 2 brake applications before your power assist is depleted, and then it takes a LOT more pedal effort.

I had an issue where when i engaged the clutch- the engine did not start - I finally sorted it out to issue with the battery ( terminals were coroded(sp))
Once i cleaned it up - i had no issues.

I also agree with MetroMPG - go to a parking lot and play around with it a while see if you can sort it out first. There are alot of Nuts out there who do not pay attention - so you want to be cautious about "playing in traffic"

I came to a complete stop. when I turned the key back it sounded as if the battery was dead as it would only chug. I waited a bit and gave it some gas and after 2 or 3 tries it finally stayed on. The car was cold...I saw somewhere that EOC should not be done this way....is this correct?

When EOC ing , you turn the key all the way to the off position right?

If the engine turns over and catches, but won't run smoothly or stay running, the battery isn't the problem. (If it were the battery, it wouldn't turn over at all, or it would turn over slowly.)

To EOC with the key, you briefly switch from the RUN position back one click to the ACC position, and after the engine quits, switch forward again to RUN.

But I'm going to say again I wouldn't do it with this car until the re-starting issue is sorted out. It could need some basic tune-up items - plugs, cap, rotor, etc - before it will restart reliably.

Sorry - not trying to be rude. If by "all the way to the off position," you mean you could go ahead and remove the key, definitely not. Every car I've ever owned will lock the steering column when you turn the key that far, whether the key is in the ignition or not.

You only have about 15 degrees or so of turn before the column locks - if you're rolling when that happens...I can't come up with how awful a scenario that is. It's awful.

Like MetroMPG said - back one click to turn off the ignition - your radio should continue playing. If it cuts out, you went too far. Allow the engine to die, then forward one click to turn the ignition back on so it's ready to leap back into action when you slip the clutch.

This is just me, but I leave the ignition off until I'm ready for it, to prevent overheating any unloaded electrical components.
