That's a pretty convoluted way to put it... noise cancelling speakers let picky buyers deal with better-mpg, noisier engine.
Novel concept though. The peanut gallery here at ecomodder often forgets that they are NOT the target market of the car producers. "The public" wants it all and is not willing to sacrifice comfort for mpg - this is a good way to deal.

After market Noise cancel would be FTW!
I've noticed similar things myself; quieter cabin makes me more patient, so I'll drive a little slower . . . .

I noticed that they only mentioned a 1 mpg improvement, but didn't mention the mpg number. Was it from 16 to 17 mpg, or maybe from 67 to 68 mpg?
Extrapolating, you could remove a mess of heavy sound insulating materials from the car, making it lighter, while the stereo still keeps it quiet. For you, at least. If the engine idles at lower rpms and produces uncomfortable noise, then that noise is audible not only in the cabin (where the audio cancels it), but around the car also. No noise cancelling for those around you on the road, in the parking lot, in your neighborhood.
On the side: it appears that lowering idle rpms can be stable and lower fuel consumption. This is good news for engine-on coasters. Wasn't there a thread on that? Can't find it, can't find it, can't find it!!!

If you turn your volume up enough you won't hear the engine
I don't understand, maybe it's because I like to listen to the engine of my vehicles while going down the road. Heck, every vehicle I drive has a noisy engine.
Good Idea for the general car buyers. It'd be better if they weren't Idling as often as most drivers do, but since they do why not improve on that right?

I'm sure you still hear the engine. They have just deadened out the "annoying" low frequency sounds associated with a lower idle. You'd need a really high-tech system to completely eliminate engine noise. It'd cost as much as the car.
