Favorite "Green Tech" news sites?
 

I finally closed my perpetual cleantechnica tab. There are just so many junk articles that lack any substance, compared to informative ones. That, combined with a cult-level of censorship that prevents any discussion, I've given up panning for traces of interesting info in the mountains of silt.

Insideev's has some good stuff, but it has a narrow focus on vehicles, and not the broad subject of future energy and technology.

What are your favorite "green tech" sites and new technology news?

I saw one the other day on some Web site that had an article about a small water turbine powering a village.
I got a pretty good look at pictures and video. Was able to calculate it was making between 170 and 300 watts. I don't think that one will power a village maybe 10 of them.

Back in the 90's I subscribed to Homepower magazine. I was fascinated with the idea of powering my parent's farm on either the small spring, or the larger creek. When the internet finally had useful data, like how to calculate potential power output based on rise and flow rate of water, I realized at best I could generate about 100W. The magazine also talked a lot about gorilla solar, which basically isn't even mentioned anymore. Most utilities allow a grid-tie, so unauthorized installations aren't popular.

Back when I was studying I used to glance through the news on Planet Ark.

If I had 100w of hydro power that was easy to harness I would. 100w day and night, rain or shine for one household is actually a good bit of power.
Calculating water power is actually very easy.
Take your GPM times your drop in feet, this gives you foot pounds per minute. 33,000 foot pounds per minute is 1 horse or 734 watts.

Easy, yeah. Everything is easy once you know how. That info wasn't readily available on the internet back in the 90s. Eventually it was, and I learned how to calculate it.

With losses and average flow rates, I think 50W is what can reasonably be expected from microhydro at my parent's house.

My friends have a [broken-down] dam that was built in the 1940s. Those techniques that pump concrete underground to shore up building foundations would effect repair. The flow is seasonal but even in summer it's substantial.

I'm working on them to install a gravity vortex waterwheel as above, to test the flow. I have a Fisher-Paykel washing machine motor that's ~750w/1hp and a design that keeps it up out of the water for easy maintenance. I think they are paralyzed by fear of success. :confused:

Eventually when I buy property, I'll be on the lookout for something with microhydro potential. Kayaking the N Santiam, I always noticed the properties that showed excellent power potential.

I doubt I'll ever own 'real' estate (actually a hypothetical unless it's an allodial title)

More likely, I could anchor an oscillating water column in a bay somewhere.
