FE baseline for older cars?

Just a quick question from a new guy here -- I see everybody rates their mileage improvements against their cars original EPA ratings. What about cars that are old enough that there is no EPA rating? Maybe contemporary magazine reviews?

90 day: 17.21 mpg (US)

Sport Coupe - '92 Tempo GL

I think most everybody is using the latest EPA ratings- different from "original" for us with older vehicles.

Pre-EPA, we have to take what we can find.

...I don't recall any official MPG number for my 1970½ AAR Cuda 340/6BBL, but the numbers that stick in my head were: 12 mpg typical (city+hiway) and 16.2 mpg (best ever) on freeway between Pt. Mugu, CA, and Yuma, AZ. Of course, the LEAD in my foot was always a factor too.
