FE baseline for older cars?

Just a quick question from a new guy here -- I see everybody rates their mileage improvements against their cars original EPA ratings. What about cars that are old enough that there is no EPA rating? Maybe contemporary magazine reviews?

I think most everybody is using the latest EPA ratings- different from "original" for us with older vehicles.

Pre-EPA, we have to take what we can find.

...I don't recall any official MPG number for my 1970½ AAR Cuda 340/6BBL, but the numbers that stick in my head were: 12 mpg typical (city+hiway) and 16.2 mpg (best ever) on freeway between Pt. Mugu, CA, and Yuma, AZ. Of course, the LEAD in my foot was always a factor too.
