#1 mid '80's VW Quantum: Had a wagon that returned 52-57+mpg. on trips (diesel) giving mini motorhome room, and seating comfort for 6 foot plus people front and back seat at same time, w good handling!
#2 1st Gen. Honda CRX: great ergonomics, non SI models capable or 62mpg. on trips w/o any mods.! Great handling, and fun to drive!
#3 early 90's Geo Metro: what more needs to be said?
#4 pre Quantum VW Dasher! Again, great mpg w diesel, but w 4spd., mpg. limited to early 50's!
#5 the original Ford Fiesta ('78- '80) Ergo not as great for tall people for all day touring, but reasonable for a 49 mpg. trip car!
