Fess up: are you an automotive hoarder? (Eco-cars or not)

Hi.

My name is Darin, and I'm a car hoarder.

(The first step is admitting you have a problem, yes?)

And then there are the enablers:

I found a nice Metro to buy today. I'm perpetually hunting for a decent twin of my '98 Firefly. I dunno if the Metro is still available, but I do know I'll buy it if I can. And that would be car number seven, currently. Yikes.

- 98 Firefly
- 04 Prius (sold! Awaiting payment)
- 04 Echo (next winter beater)
- 92 Firefly convertible (future restoration project)
- ForkenSwift Metro EV rusted out shell/parts car
- 91 Suzuki Swift parts car
- possible nice new Metro??

But if I get the Metro, I WILL be culling the herd: Prius tomorrow, if the plan holds; At least one of the parts cars will go this year; Echo will be gone next summer if I get the Metro.

So, how big is your herd?

Oh, and list 'em.

Hi, Darin.

Two adults here, two cars. Our max ever was three, and that was only once, a junker that was out of the way enough that it wasn't worth getting it to a scrapyard. Then we put it on CL for a few hundred and it left.

I'm not a hoarder, I only have... er, wait... it only goes up to 7?

Hrmm... :p

darcane 07-21-2016 05:46 PM

Actually, current list is only six:
'01 Civic - daily beater
'05 Tahoe - Wife's daily driver
'06 Ninja 650R
'67 Mustang
'68 Chevy C10
'86 Toyota Corolla

but it changes frequently and is usually higher. I'm in between project cars while I'm moving.

Not a car hoarder in the usual way.
I used to have an '85 Honda Civic that just wouldn't die. Drove it to the north of Finland. Did powerslides on the beach. Raced it, had a couple of accidents, still it held up until rust ate its structural parts - at 19 years of age.
My friends had scores of cars over the years that I owned that little Civic.
I used to joke that my first, second, third, etc. car were all the same: that Civic.
Does keeping a car alive against the odds count as hoarding? ;)

Meanwhile I went through 6 motorbikes, owning 3 at a time. Being single.
Bikes are gone now, saw too many bad things happen, happy I'm still alive - and a father of 2, sure does change your world view.

There's a problem with the poll: the last option (I drive everything I own!) can be combined with any of the others. I own two (well, three if you count the horse - and do bikes count?), Insight and Toyota pickup, which are used for different sorts of driving.

me and my metro 07-22-2016 01:23 AM

I was a certified Metroholic for at least 8 years, 2007-2015. I have fully recovered, I nor any of my family members own Metros anymore.
Unfortunately I was only temporarily cured, I now have three 2002 L series Saturns. They are a much nicer car than a Metro and they flat tow behind the motorhome. I have been driving my LW300 for the last year. They are really Opel Vectra B series made here and marketed as the big Saturn from 2000-2004. The v-6 cars are all automatics, the 2.2 Ecotec 4 cylinder cars were available with both a 5 speed and the automatic. I have made several maintenance repairs to this car but I really miss driving a stick shift. So I went 700 miles to buy a L200/5 car with a thrown rod. It is a high line car with all options, I have another Ecotec short block. I may convert my v-6 wagon to the 4/5, I have the same year complete donor. Oh crap- here we go again. The other sedan is a 4/auto with a bad timing chain and bent valves. Clean car w/ 130k for $300, I couldn't pass it up. I will repair this one and drive it while I decide what to do with the wagon.

The list
1968 CST 3/4 ton Chevy pickup on a 72 4x4 chassis. Been in the family since new.
1984 GMC custom crew cab on a suburban frame, 6.5 / 700r4 4x4
2006 Lincoln Navigator 4x4
1996 Coachman motorhome 33'
1984 Ford Ranger 4x4 ranch truck
1984 Seaswirl 18' ski boat w/ 350 Chevy/OMC
2002 Saturn LW300
2002 Saturn L200/5
2002 Saturn L200/A

These are in my name and there are 2 drivers.
Pretty scary when you write it down.

MetroMPG 07-22-2016 09:21 AM

Wow. I think Redneck is going to win.

I guess the assumption I was going by: if you actually have insurance on and use all your vehicles, it's not really hoarding.

Maybe that's the difference between "collecting" and hoarding. :D
