There's that, but also the part where what they would buy two years from now might be completely different.

Like those people who bought into Solar City to lock in a marginally better rate for 20 years and are now watching the cost of solar installations fall through the roof.

The whole point of having an electric car is to eat yogurt and granola and not wash your feet!

I know a girl that drives a full-cab truck. I helped her move last week (on short notice) and hey, she was able to move with two trips of a couple vehicles her family already owned! No need to rent anything!

Except her truck is her family vehicle, which she only uses to haul herself to work and back, and drive around her two small boys.

My Civic transports my nephews just fine. At least one complains how small my car is. Shut up and play on your iPad!

She says one day she wants a lifted truck.

I absolutely do not understand why.

I do not like how the housing market looks right now, but in theory I could purchase a house before too long, while she is renting, and making truck payments.

Probably paying interest on the lift, too.

It could work. With max torque from 0 rpm and fine motor control, you should get 0 wheel slippage.

The price of solar hasn't dropped faster then the payback in the last 20 years, it's like that saying about the best time to plant a tree being 20 years ago.

Yes, it's cheaper to install solar now, but waiting doesn't have a benefit.

I'll check for sure, but my parents use around 50 to 80 gallons of gas per year in their 2nd vehicle/truck, yesterday it was too haul home two GE ElecTrack lawn tractors, a Prius even at 60mpg for slow in town driving would use more gasoline per year then they do with a truck and a Nissan Leaf.
I think they would still use more gas with a Chevy Volt then with a Leaf.

I may not have thought this through completely, but Solar City's business model is to put panels that they own on a roof you own, and then sell you electricity at a fixed rate for 20 years.

[The Sate of Oregon just decided to go coal-free by 2030. When they put out bids, they found their planning figures were outdated, and they now expect to move the date up to 2028 with a rate increase of only 0.1% over 20 years [citation needed].]

What they are finding is that anyone who will need a new roof in the next five years isn't a good prospect. So their new model is to go into the solar re-roofing business.

Who owns the roof on your house then?

Who owns the electric meter on the side of your house? And the lines running to it? That doesn't seem to have been much of a problem in the century or so that everyone bought their power from the electric company - even if some people did squawk a bit over smart meters :-)

But the electric meter just meters electricity (and fries your brain); a solar roof also has to keep rainwater out of your sock drawer.

Years ago, Bucky Fuller predicted we would lease our houses from a company, just like we did our telephones.

Strangely enough, he asserted it was living in substandard Chicago apartment blocks that lead to the sickness and death of his first daughter and the birth of his second daughter that brought him to the 'lightful housing' that ultimately lead to the Dymaxion houses.

Here's Reyner Banham poking fun at Bucky Fuller and François Dallegret:

Includes a discussion of A Home Is Not A House that is really off-topic.
