You guys ever stop to think that for some of us, these vehicles are hot rods. The parameter just happens to be MPG rather than MPH or quarter-mile time.

Absolutely! It's all a challenge. Whether pushing the envelope in speed or mpg, it's a rush just the same.

Many of us - including myself - have taken this far beyond any economic gains.
At this point, its about the braggin' rights.

Yeah, I have fun posting that a Ferd has the highest overall mpg average I've seen . . on the Dodge boards. No one responds, or, familiar with the truck they criticize "the look".
It is about performance: the most work over the longest life at the lowest cost. Or, I pay one-third less per gallon than you.

A balance of trade issue when resolved places funds normally sent overseas directly into your local economy, where they are most effective.
I hate OPEC, so choking off their money supply is an effective expression of that feeling. Even if it is not their oil I am buying directly reducing the cost makes it less expensive for everyone.
That is not really enough though, my goal is eliminating them altogether.
Maintained a family (including wife's small SUV) average of close to 60 MPG ain't bad either, and keeping vehicle fuel costs below $200 per month.
regards
Mech

I realize that even though we are all Eco-Modders, we have different outlooks. I have owned 40plus car/trucks and probably a dozen different motorcycles, and when I was in my 20's, I bought different styles of bodies just for fun. But almost all of them had some growing collector value, so even not always getting all my money back was no big deal, because I was enjoying myself. Alltogether, I've only experienced new veh. depreciation about4 times, and never want to go there again. My freedom to use hard earned money as I see fit, precludes any peer pressure..got to have new nonsense that we all should have outgrown by Junior High! I know that an '80's car will meet my needs, and still del. fantastic mileage for yrs. from now! VW Quantum Diesel.. 53-low 70's are trip possible.. fun to have a custom project that is different... no depreciation, no high taxes, nothing beyond liability insurance needed... nice body for $200.... clean enough to look decent, but comfortable enough for homemade airdams, skirts...ie...personality, that no OEM will ever give you... I just wish I would have settled down on what really matters a little earlier... I don't want a newer veh. with Plumber's body side cracks, and a steering wheel w a bag that can explode in my face! this country is headed for dire economics, so high tech beyond reason will bite in the rear! We are all different... I just appreciate simplicity where possible w $$$$ freedom!

I cancelled all my subscriptions years ago to several car and cycle mags because I've largely lost interest in the new stuff. Others can have it; I'll come around when it's cheap to scavenge.
