A carb'd engine can be just as efficient or more so than a injected engine (mpg wise), it depends on who tuned it and what load you are running, I am not saying a carb is more efficient across every throttle position, but it can outdo EFI especially if you lean it out a bit which is rather difficult on EFI.

With my 4x4 4 banger EFI TB Nissan I have been able to lean out the mix by adding resistors (I use small pots) to the cylinder head temp sensor and the throttle position sensor...and can control these from the cab. Did not see any mpg gain from doing this...and do see a loss of power if leaned out too much. Fairly simple to do...IF you know what to do.

* There are some various writeups on how to do this...including one I did.

Will probably try to test this leanout with a vapor injector (FA2000 type) sometime soon.

You don't want the motor running lean continously and generally you only want up to approx 16.7:1 when holding steady state or decreasing speed, not during acceleration. You would have to rewrite your ecu./ecm program to accomplish this, similar to GMs euro cars.
