How does one check for such? Be very detailed and specific.

I diagnosed mine with a ScanGauge (MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure) reading which showed it way out of normal range. ScanGauge is not an option on your '92, unfortunately.

Google "how to find engine vacuum leak" for other detection methods (that's what I'd do).

Has your exhaust become smellier or more noticeable (cloudy)? Mine did, because the vac leak caused a rich condition.

What's Google? Haha- Just Kidding. Will check.

Nothing coming out of the exhaust any smellier than normal.

I suspect a clogged cat, clogged fuel filter, poor spark, or low compression.

There's a fine screen bag in the tank attached to the pump like all cars have. It shouldn't be clogged unless you've been dumping really dirty fuel into the tank. But there's also a real fuel filter next to the tank, on the driver's side. Round black cylinder with two fuel hoses clamped to it. Wouldn't hurt to change it.

I think some of the later Metros had just an in-tank filter instead of the screen bag, but your '92 has an external filter.

i'd check the vaccum lines, filters (fuel air Etc), also a fuel regulator may have somethin to do with it
