If the money were available, I'd say something like an 04-06 Prius with an added 2-4kwh battery bank and plug in capabilities. I know they advertise one such unit on the GoHypermiling podcast for only $3k. It would at least take care of one direction of travel and if you had the chance to plug in, both.
