Greetings from the opposite but the same

Greetings,

What a great resource! I found this site a year ago when I needed to jump start my brain on an aero issue while working as Team Engineer for an Indy Lights team. Even though I had 8 years of previous work on Stock Cars (both NASCAR nad ARCA) and worked in wind tunnels at both Langley and Aerodyn, I still got an idea lurking these pages.

After being in the racing business for almost 40 years I look for technology transfer everywhere I can and glad to find ecomodder. From an engineering perspective the variables are all the same its just deciding which to hold constant and see what the results turn out to be. So in many respects I'm the same just opposite.

Also, while not a total hypermiler I do plenty of driving tricks in my Ranger to keep as much in my pocket and not in the oil company's bank account, and appreciate the ideas I find here. These days I only fill up about every third week.

Always promoting tech transfer I added a link from my site back to ecomodder so other racers can pick up some tips as more and more races are becoming fuel runs. I hope to return the ideas favor to some of you as you may wish to lurk the reference library Auto-Ware (Autoware Inc) auto racing reference library I've built on my site. Currently I have about 70 pages of goodies and hope to add about another 108 by the end of July.

JB

Welcome to ecomodder! You certainly have an interesting background, I will have to check out your site when I have more time for a good sit-down-read.

Hi and welcome! I'm curious what the issue was.

On most of the oval tracks the driver has WOT and so it is an engineer's race. I can't say exactly 'cause I still got to make a living, but looking through the aero portion of the forum I saw a picture and got an idea to help minimize the Von Karman vortex off the rear wing.

JBlock -

Welcome to EM! I already learned something from your posts. I had never heard of a Von Karman vortex until you mentioned it :

Welcome to the forum, JB. You've probably already discovered there are more than a couple of members with racing backgrounds. Tech & knowledge transfers for sure.

A little tip to all, pass to me years ago from my friend Joe Katz in San Diego. We always think about form drag, but there is a big nut to crack with wake drag. Once I started thinking behind the car we started going a lot faster, i.e. lower cd.

A picture of that wing would be nice to see.

To me, form drag and the size of the wake are directly related, as the wake itself is a part of form drag. Form drag is most of the pressure differential front to back, and since the wake is one big low pressure zone, you minimize the wake to reduce form drag. Or maybe you can teach me something new again, as you schooled me too with the Von Karman vortex.
