Oops, the topic at hand. I remember the stink about the LA Transportation Deputy. If he had been doing the best job ever, I wouldn't care. However, it's just plain stupid politics to drive a Hummer and hold that position. That implies to me that he isn't qualified for his position, so he deserves the heat.
In general, I look at it on an individual basis. If I see a person that is *displacing* their waste with good works, then I will give them a bye. For example, if a Hummer driver succeeded in devising a way to make regular ICE engines emit only water just like fuel cells (fat chance, I know), then I would ignore what they drive because their *achievement* displaced their waste.
