1988 toyota pickup 100% better MPGs

About a year ago my father told me about a group of people he heard about who try to get super high mileage out of their vehicles. I was instantly intrigued. I didnt really follow up on the concept until recently. I read up on as many driving techniques as i could find (found most on ecomodder.com) and i put them to use to the best of my ability. I Didnt really think that my economy was all that spectacular at 36.4MPG on my first tank as a Hypermiler. But as I browsed the garage I noticed that most people were getting between 40% and 60% better than the combined rating. So it became very apparent that my results were rather awesome at nearly 100% increased mileage. I live in a very hilly area too. I have done no modifications to my truck but I have ordered my vac gauge and my electric fan. I really love this truck so i will more than likely keep my major mods to under the hood and synthetic fluids. I may make a bed cover. I think If I try to take it to the next level and get near the 200% or 300% MPG level I will look at a different vehicle. But for now I think thats not too shabby.

I'm not sure why the combined rating for that truck is so low at 22mpg. There is something wrong because that's the same rating as the 4x4.

Mid-30s is fairly typical mileage for a 4x2 Toyota; the 22RE is a very efficient engine.

I get 27mpg with my '89 4x4 around town with no special techniques, just a little coasting and keeping the speed under control.

I liked my old Toyota truck a lot, and every time I make a payment on my new car I wish I would have kept it. I had very good results with engine off coasting and bump starting.

I was looking at how to aeromod the bed but sold it and got another car before I did it.

I thought the same thing. but, keep in mind My truck is a 1-ton. It is geared really low. I think it has 4.11s. Not for sure but top speed in that truck is like 80mph. I would normally get about 19-22mpg.

I've always loved the cheap+light small pickups from the 1980's. Before they got hot you get a new base model for $6K.

No offense and great job getting the mileage that you do from the truck. But my 4wd Tahoe gets that mileage and its more than twice the Toyota's size and has 3x the power, wonder why the MPG rating is so low? I always thought those trucks were much better on gas. Have you considered a gearing swap if you have a 4:10 a 3:73 or 3:55 would make a
huge difference.

None Taken. And yes a rear end swap would be top priority.

That is a pretty large increase in one tank for only using technique without instruments - although IMHO that (techniques) is the biggest mod you can do. Do you have an idea of the previous tanks ?

What techniques did you use the most ?

Those Toyotas are definitely hard to beat.

I almost guarantee that you'll be doing aeromods in a month or two.
