How to cool the car off with out running it
This weekend is going to be something like 104°F.
My wife wants a car port. We don't have one yet plus 104 is still pretty warm. So I went to lows and found an 8,000btu/hr frigid air brand air conditioner that said "dent" on the front. Price was $240. Yes It had a dent. I figured I would try to see how far I could talk them down. I got it for $140, I didn't even plan on buying an air conditioner when I went there today. I am going to replace my 3 or 4 year old 5,000btu A/C for the guest room, sell it for $75. Until my mom visits I'm going to use it in the car. So I folded down the back seat put the air conditioner in the trunk so the front was blowing into the back seat area and packed a towel around the edges and plugged it in. Leave the trunk open for heat rejection. I will add pictures soon. |

It cools off the car great. Cant be using more than 10 cents worth of power.

If you are in a humid area the condensation might be a problem. It normally very dry here. |
I'd say you got ripped off...but at least its 8000btu. I didn't pay much more for my portable 8000btu, and I only paid 50 for a 5000 and 70 for another 5000btu. That was a few years ago, mind you...
Oh, hey...they're meant to drip off out the back, afaik. You might have a "leak" spring up all of a sudden... |
We had about 20% humidity today. Any extra water will get burned off by the condenser coils.
I wasn't going to pay $240 for a new one. Some one I work with wants to buy my 3 or 4 year old window unit for $75 next pay day. So total the new window unit will only cost $65. I try to use them for 2 to 4 years then sell them and replace them with a brand new scratch/dent unit. Instead of running them till they die, plus after a few years they lose efficiency and don't cool as well. Last summer i was using all window units, I have replaced all window units with high efficiency inverter split heatpump units except in 1 room that is used for storage and guests. Now the window unit will hardly get used. I sold the other 2 window units as soon as it started to warm up a few months back. The splits cost about $2,400. I got tired of noisy inefficient window units that barely cool the house. |
Nice mod! I am curious roughly how long it takes to cool down the car?

I ran it for an hour, that was plenty long enough. The compressor even cycled off.
I think it really only needs more like a half hour. |
