how does this affect my aero (OEM spoiler)

basicly just that, how does this "spoiler" affect my aerodynamics? and if its a negative affect would it help much removing it? if its only a minor gain i would rather (at this time) not bother removing it but it would be good to know its affects.

Hi Johnpr,

That looks like its designed to reduced the drag, rather than decrease lift. So, just leave it.

It actually looks a lot like the deck extensions used on the salt flats (not as radical) since it protrudes dead straight out the rear it may help by lengthening the profile.
Someone with fotoshop can measure the angle from the top of the cabin to the end of the extension and see if it brings the tail profile up to the all important cutoff angle.
12 degrees or was it 15?
I can never remember.
Nice car btw.

thanks guys, so if i understand correctly, having a deck extension can be a good thing as it changes the cutoff angle.

I'm with the others. That's a drag-reducing appendage. Similar to what's found on the defunct Accord hybrid, and the Civic hybrids.

Yup, that lip spoiler is you friend.

Talking about the Accord, have you seen how the trunk his shaped on the 2008? I was following one in traffic the other day and it hit me. The trunk is slightly curved, raising in the middle, reducing the size of the arch vortex.

The Metro hatchback cars have a similar lip on the top of the hatch. If MetroMPG hasn't hacked his off yet, we must be good to go

I noticed that on my old 97 Metro, but it was fairly subtle, it was just an extension of the sheet metal above the window. Have you seen the Fit and some Yaris' have a little lip "spoiler" above the rear window? Anyone know if those are for looks or if they reduce drag?

rear spoiler

I'd hate to live on the difference.I think its more styling than drag reduction, however it cuts drag,if ever so slightly,so I vote, leave it alone.
