How expensive would gas need to be for you to make a 20% reduction in use?

I'm talking about an actual 20% reduction, and not just "I'd like to reduce that much" or something like that. Meaning, if X price were to happen, then I would have to make the reduction one way or the other.

Because (like you) I pretty much don't do any extraneous driving as it is.

I'd feel for the commuters at that price though.

I voted >6. Here is why. I drive about about 20,000 total miles with both cars. Both cars get about 50 MPG. My cost yearly at $3.00 is $1,200. My old cars were an Eldorado and a Silverado pickiup. These cars averaged about 16 MPG This annual cost at $2.00 was $2400. So If the cost of gas goes to $6.00 then I am back to where I was 2 years ago.

Two years ago, My wife and I decided to change from fuel hogs to a VW TDI and Prius. We figured that gas was going to continue to go up and up and up.

Now that being said, I want to boost my current MPG better then where I am now.

I voted >6 as well...It would have to be expensive for me to take the bus instead of driving to school since I'd have to ship things that I couldn't take on the bus (like my bike).

Sweet change there, best map man!

I currently commute ~53 miles a day. I drive to a commuter train lot 5 miles away and ride the rest of the way. I figure I'm saving about 93% of the gas the EPA would have me consuming. I may telecommute a day a week but the fuel savings would be minimal (to ~ 94%).

If gas went up over $6, I might have to find me a forklift and an engineless metro or something.

I've considered it. Last week's -4F temp was a bit discouraging.

Hello -

My life's verrrrrrrrrrry complicated in silly ways and the car is integral to dealing with those complications, so I don't think I'd change the number of miles. I'd just switch to a more economical car or maybe add a motorcycle. I would try to telecommute more. I have tried that in the past, but the job requires physical presence in a lot of testing situations.

I think that the society around me would react to the higher prices and start doing some of the things I do.

Sooooooo, I'll vote > $6.01 too.

I think that I have already reduced my driving by +20% compared to when gas was under $2.00 a gallon. I think if gas was around $4.50 a gallon I would stop taking some of my "less important" trips. Once gas gets up to $8 to $10 a gallon I would just give up on owning an ICE vehicle (unless it's getting around 100mpg).
