How many degrees is too many? (WAI temperature)

I have a hot air intake installed on my 97 geo metro 1.0 liter... My UG says my temp is going to about 176+ degrees... Is this too much or is it fine? It seems to run okay

My saturn runs OK too at that temps. I think it cools down by the time it gets to the throttle body and intake manifold, as the sensor is in the air box. At times it showed over 230F after long driving, hotter than the engine temp, but since have cooled it down to 150 to 180.

the 1.0 metros being TBI will certainly benefit from warmer air to help vaporize the fuel.

measure the answer
i assume you are recording your fuel consumption values
did your FE improve when you tampered with your system ?

yes or no ?

did your calculated load value as measured with UG go down at the same driving conditions
same speed same load same ambient temperature ?

yes or no ?

the ECM will adjust ign timing based on IAT value (among other things) and you may not actually be getting an improvement
or
you may

only you can answer this
so ? what is the answer ?

I am getting better mileage with the hotter temps.... At least opposed to 40 degrees when I first start... I'm not sure about the load %... So yeA i know it's working but I just want to make sure I'm not doing any damage that I don't know about.... Thanks for the replies

Is that your steady-state temperature? How did you manage to get your air temp that high?

Yea it's stay steady there on the interstate after about 10 minutes.... I have a tube that attaches to the exhaust manifold in place of the stock intake tube that runs to the filter... I installed it when it started getting cold and my mpg dropped so much, but I'm sure I will have to move it away some during the summer.... Also, I have the top grill opening blocked completely and the bottom blocked 85% or so....

Since getting the torque app and now its finally warm outside I've been able to measure intake temps. At about 70 ambient I see around 150f. As soon as I let up on the throttle it drops sharply to say 120, egr is pushing it to 150. Would there be a benefit to blocking the egr and doing more wai/hai? To increase the throttle angle and decrease pumping losses. Btw my engine runs 2100 rpm at 60.

I'd leave EGR alone. Pumping losses would be decreased, anyway, with EGR in place.

The challenge is to use the hot air only during cruise. Typically the PCM will pull a proportional amount of extra timing to the load you apply. If you're going to be doing pollute and glide then the IATs can reduce the effectiveness of your acceleration phase.

Of course this makes sense as your cylinder filling and thus cylinder pressures will increase. Old cars are not very sophisticated because emissions laws didn't require emissions results outside a very standard operating range. While hot air injection may save a little fuel the NOX emissions will probably go through the roof. You may be better off working with EGR.
